Post-operative care is vital immediately after having a tooth taken out. It is critical to keep firm pressure on the extraction site with gauze to control bleeding for at least the first 30-60 mins after the procedure.

Signs You May Have A Dry Socket

Other indications of dry socket are pus forming in the mouth, bad taste or bad odor. Dry socket can become very painful, and you may experience swelling and sleep loss.

Excessive rinsing or spitting, drinking through a straw, or smoking could all be causes of dry socket. It's essential to follow Dr. Harlow's post-operative instructions carefully, so you enjoy a smooth and comfortable recovery and avoid conditions like dry socket.

tooth extractions in charlotte nc Changes occur in your mouth after tooth extraction, so you need to understand how to care for yourself after the procedure, so you have a successful recovery. Dr. Harlow usually provides Charlotte patients with the following instructions after tooth extraction.

Watch out for numbness: You’ll be given a local anesthetic to numb your mouth, and the sensation will last for several hours after your procedure. Take care not to accidentally bite your cheek and don’t plan on eating until after the numbness wears off.

  • Control bleeding: Dr. Harlow will place a gauze pack on the extraction site, and you should bite down on it for 30 to 45 minutes after you leave our office. The gauze minimizes bleeding and also helps the blood clot to form. If the site still bleeds after you remove the gauze pack, replace it. Repeat the process until bleeding stops.
  • Protect the clot: The blood clot that forms on the extraction site in the first 24 hours is part of the normal healing process, so do your best not to disturb it. Avoid sucking actions like smoking a cigarette or using a straw as these can dislodge the clot. Don’t rinse your mouth vigorously and avoid alcohol until the clot forms.
  • Oral hygiene – You can brush and floss your other teeth, but don’t disturb the extraction site or the teeth around it.

If you think you need to have a tooth extraction, call our Charlotte, NC, and schedule an appointment so we can help you.
