If I stab my gums or the roof of my mouth while eating, is that a dental emergency?

Updated in August of 2026

Accidental injury to your gums or the roof of your mouth while eating can be painful and a more than little scary. However, not every oral injury qualifies as a dental emergency. Minor cuts or punctures from sharp foods like tortilla chips usually heal independently with time and, if necessary, simple at-home care.

How Do I Take Care of a Cut on My Gums or the Roof of My Mouth?

You can help the area heal and avoid infection with a few simple steps:

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water. This helps clean the area and cut down on bacteria.
  • Stick to soft foods for a day or two. Avoid spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods that could irritate the cut.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if the area feels sore or tender.
