Everyone knows they should floss daily, but the truth is that the vast majority of people are not regular flossers. Even if you are a diligent brusher, your toothbrush cannot reach the spaces in between teeth that dental floss can.

Ask any top dentist in Charlotte, NC for proper flossing technique, and they are likely to share the steps below.

Proper Flossing Technique

  1. Don’t worry about flossing too frequently. If you are experiencing tenderness when you do floss, it’s probably from flossing incorrectly. But because it takes plaque and bacteria about 24 hours to form between teeth, it’s only necessary to floss once a day. If, however, you feel food particles stuck between your teeth, it’s perfectly fine to floss after eating on a regular basis. Just be sure to do it correctly so you don’t irritate your gums.
  2. Choose any type of dental floss you like—and will use on a consistent basis. Waxed or unwaxed, flavored or unflavored. There are plenty of types of floss on the market, and the type you use is entirely up to you.
  3. Have a flossing plan. It’s best to approach flossing methodically, starting in one area and ending in another. That way you are less likely to miss a spot.
  4. Use enough dental floss—about 18 inches—and hold dental floss correctly in both hands.
  5. Don’t force the floss between tight spaces. If you have some teeth that so close together the floss gets stuck, it’s best to use a slow sawing motion to get the floss into the tight space. Forcing the floss could cause it to come down hard on your gums and could even cause your gums to bleed.
  6. Work the sides of each tooth, gently moving up and down.
  7. Floss at the bottom of the tooth under the gum line. Be sure to do this gently or you can irritate the gums.
