Tooth extractions can be straightforward or complex. The latter is true if the tooth is positioned at an unusual angle or only partially erupted, for example, a wisdom tooth.

However, recovery is typically the same, no matter the nature of your tooth extraction in Charlotte, NC.

About Tooth Extractions

You may need a tooth extraction for any of the following reasons.

Deeply Decayed or Injured Tooth

We recommend extraction if your dentist can't save the tooth with treatment and crowning. However, this should always be followed up with tooth replacement to maintain your smile aesthetics and oral health.

Tooth replacement may include dentures & partials, dental implants, or a dental bridge.

Before Orthodontics and Tooth Replacement

If you're considering orthodontics, your dentist may opt to extract a tooth if your jaw Is overcrowded. Additionally, we will remove the remaining teeth if you want complete dentures.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Erupting years after your necessary adult teeth, wisdom teeth have no purpose. You don't need them for aesthetics or chewing function. Your dentist will discuss extraction if they don't erupt correctly or push on other teeth.

Caring For Your Mouth Post Extraction

Because every case differs, your dentist may provide more specific instructions following your extractions.

But typically, we recommend:

  • Soft foods for the first day or two—yogurt, mashed potatoes, creamed soup, etc.
  • No chewing on the extraction site for a day or two.
  • No smoking for a day or two to promote safe healing.
  • No drinking through a straw for the first day or two to promote painless healing.
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to disinfect—don't spit, but allow the salt water to drain from your mouth into the sink basin.
  • No eating hot foods until the anesthesia wears off.
