How Does a Dentist Treat Gum Injections?

When you have dental procedures at your dentist’s office, you may receive gum injections to numb the area. The injection will contain a local anesthetic. Most commonly, a specific local anesthetic, known as Lidocaine.

The Two Most Common Forms of Dental Injections Include:

Infiltration Injections

An infiltration injection numbs a minimal area so that a dentist can perform a localized procedure.

Block Injections

Block injections numb a much larger area of your mouth for a more complex procedure. For example, one side of your lower jaw.

In some cases, the dentist places a numbing gel on the gum at the injection site before injecting the anesthetic. This makes the injection entirely painless for most patients, which is ideal for patients with a dental phobia or a fear of needles.

How Long Does the Numbing Last?

The length of time a patient will feel numb after treatment depends on the patient’s specific reaction to the medication and the amount of medication used. Generally, the numbness wears off within a few hours, and during that time, you should avoid eating anything that could cause you to bite your lips, cheeks, or tongue accidentally. Since your mouth is numb, you cause damage without even realizing that you’re biting into soft tissue.

To be safe, we recommend following your dentist’s instructions closely after your injection and dental procedure, even if you feel like you’re back to normal.

What If Numbing Isn’t Enough?

At Harlow Dental, we understand the anxiety that dental procedures invoke in some patients. We never want our patients to feel nervous or afraid of visiting us, and we will do whatever we can to help. If you don’t think numbing is enough to make you comfortable while you have your procedure in our dental office, discuss your concerns with our team.

In addition to numbing, we may offer you nitrous oxide, a mild sedative that you can inhale through a nasal mask. Nitrous oxide takes effect and fades quickly, so there’s no need to have someone drive you to and from your dental appointment. However, while in the dental chair, it should make you feel tired and relaxed, helping the appointment go more smoothly.
